Stream description: Guitar for Singers and Songwriters

Or “what I wish someone had told me 20 years ago!” We will delve into a deeper understanding of the guitar as an accompanying instrument to vocals, and a songwriting tool. This will all be covered “hands on”; heavy on the playing, light on the theory lectures. Topics will include:

 Beyond 1,4,5: Understanding the “Nashville Number system” for identifying, and understanding chords. This is a great tool for playing with others, but also for figuring out where chord progressions are likely to go in a given key.

 Understanding the power of chord shapes as a way to develop grooves and melody lines, and to complement other players in an ensemble.

 The power of the capo. A capo isn’t a crutch, it’s a tool for using different chord shapes, and developing different grooves.

 Alternate tunings and partial capos as tools for developing different voices and grooves.
